The Location
MANAWATU – stretching from Rangiwahia in the north to Himatangi Beach in the south, and encompassing New Zealand’s sixth largest city, Palmerston North, to the east – is recognised as the “gateway’’ to the central and lower North Island.
Its unique position allows easy access to adjoining districts such as Wanganui, Rangitikei, southern Hawke’s Bay, Tararua and Horowhenua, while other regional cities like New Plymouth and Napier are only two to three hours drive away. New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, is less than two hours by road south of Palmerston North.
The People
The region’s total population exceeds 106,400, with Palmerston North (77,000) the only centre with a designated city status. Feilding (14,000) is Manawatu’s biggest town and only 19km north-west of Palmerston North. The rest of the population is dotted throughout the region in either small service towns or rural communities such as Apiti, Ashhurst, Kimbolton, Cheltenham, Halcombe, Pohangina, Sanson, Bunnythorpe, Rongotea, Tangimoana, Longburn and Linton.
