Trades Mentor tasked with inspiring secondary school students
Jacqui Phillips is theTrades Mentor for Tools for Schools and is based at Vision Manawatu. Her role is to interest students at all levels at secondary schools in the region in pursuing a trade as a career. Raising awareness of the trades, linking businesses up with apprentices, informing young people of the options available to them, Jacqui’s role is multifaceted.
Jacqui says, “There are a number of trades that people are already aware of, and which people usually think of when considering apprenticeships. I want to build awareness of some of the lesser known trades, and really increase the options available to young people in the region.”
As Trades Mentor, Jacqui organises industry days where groups of 10 students are taken out to experience activity in the trade of their choice and to talk to those involved in the trade; gateway placements; and facilitation of recruitment for local industry.
