Defence personnel discounts
16 October 2008
Defence force personnel and their families are being warmly welcomed by the Manawatu business community with the introduction of an extensive discount scheme.
The Manawatu Defence Hub (MDH), a defence and security industry group, is driving the initiative in collaboration with the Manawatu Chamber of Commerce, Vision Manawatu and the Palmerston North City Council, according to Murray Cross who chairs the MDH.
"It's part of our relationship building with Defence and we see it as a great opportunity to recognise the input that NZ Defence Force and it's people, have into the local economy," Mr Cross said.
As a former serviceman Mr Cross believes the families, who are often new to the area, will appreciate that their value and important place in communities throughout the region is acknowledged.
The Manawatu Chamber of Commerce jumped at the chance to build stronger, more effective connections between the defence and business sectors, according to Chairman Paul O'Brien.
"The defence forces families are such an important part of our community," he said.
"We're delighted we can recognise them with these valuable discount opportunities and we're acknowledging the significant contribution the defence sector makes to the Manawatu economy."
Potentially more than 4,000 servicemen and their families could benefit from tens of thousands of dollars of discounts on offer from, initially, over 65 participating businesses from restaurants and shops to vet services, computer support and banking services.
