New university paper links business theory and practice
Massey University’s College of Business and its Career Services unit, together with the Manawatu Chamber of Commerce and Vision Manawatu have developed a new university paper, Internship in Business, which commences in July this year.
The paper is for final year undergraduate students, and offers them the opportunity to apply in the ‘real’ world the skills and knowledge learned throughout their degree.
Internship in Business takes the form of an internally assessed business-related project with a local business and offers students a way to transition from university to the work force. The students spend 12 weeks working within the business on a pre-defined project.
Vision Manawatu Skills and Education Manager Talei Smith said, “This paper is a great step towards a regional network connecting training provision and industry needs. Most importantly, we are seeing a real commitment from those local businesses participating in the project. Those businesses are acknowledging that students represent value and can make a contribution to our economy.”
The internship paper has been considered for several years. Associate Professor Sarah Leberman of the Department of Management at Massey said while the paper is the first of its kind offered at Massey, its equivalent in sports management, ‘the practicum’, has been very successful over the past 18 years. She said, “We have had applications from 20 students who are interested in the new paper and we are confident that it will help achieve the College of Business mission of ‘Creating leaders, Transforming business’.
“Although this inaugural paper is for one semester, we hope that next year the paper will cover the full university year, so students can become more embedded in the business, allowing fresh ideas to develop over time” she said.
Participating businesses in the internship paper are:
