Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme
The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme is an experimental business programme where secondary school students set up their own company and run it throughout the year. Students create real products or services, implement real marketing plans, earn real money, pay real tax, and keep real profits.
YES is about working towards goals and taking all the steps necessary to achieve them. It is aimed at Year 12 and 13 students.
Participation in the YES Trade Fair gives students the opportunity to promote and sell their products to the public. This year we have over 10 schools competing, including Palmerston North Girls’ High, Waiopehu College, Nga Tawa, Freyberg High School, and Otaki College.
Ideas range from First Aid Pets for dogs to beauty products, celebrity healthy food cookbooks, branded clothing, DIY DVDs, and stadium cushions.
Assessment and qualifications are available to students enabling academic credit for their work, encouraging additional rewards for being involved in the programme.
Young Enterprises:
- Add value to school-based knowledge
- Learn how to run a business
- Learn value of being enterprising
- Develop a “can do” attitude
- Learn to take and manage risks
Vision Manawatu is working with the Enterprise New Zealand Trust to help facilitate the programme in the Manawatu. Palmerston North was the original start up location for the programme, which has now spread to over 18 other regions.
