Key facts about the Manawatu education sector

  • There are over 4,500 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs in the education sector of Manawatu

  •  In 2002 there were approximately 30,000 people engaged in tertiary education, either part-time or full-time, in Palmerston North, representing over 40% of the city’s population

  • There are almost 3,000 international students in Manawatu
  • Although Palmerston North has only 2% of the national population, it has 10% of the full time tertiary student numbers and 12% of the employment in tertiary education

  • The total monetary effect of the tertiary education sector on the Palmerston North city economy is 1.0 billion per annum.  This represents the sum of direct, indirect and induced impacts of spending of the institutions and their students

  • The direct spending from students and education providers amounts to $440m per annum

Cold, it ain't...

  • Palmerston North is warmer than Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.  Mean temperatures in Palmerston North are warmer than Taupo, and about the same as Hamilton and Rotorua.

Is it windy?

  • Did people tell you that Palmerston North was windy?  Well yes, we have the Tararua Windfarm to prove it but it also doesn't get smog like Hamilton or Christchurch! Palmerston North has clean air and is not as windy as Wellington, Wanganui or New Plymouth.

Do I need a raincoat?

  • Palmerston North has about 25% less rain than Wellington or Auckland. We also have less rain than Hamilton, Rotorua, New Plymouth, and...Invercargill!
