Many significant Tertiary Education Organisations (TEOs) represent the Manawatu, including the following key players:
Massey University
Massey University is widely regarded as New Zealand’s most progressive University. Massey University’s Turitea, Hokowhitu, and Extra-Mural campuses are all based in Palmerston North, and are the home to about 10,000 students, the majority of which are involved in full-time study.
Massey offers more courses than any other university in New Zealand including some you can only study at Massey, like Veterinary Science and Aviation.
Universal College of Learning
UCOL’s campuses are based throughout the lower half of the North Island. The largest campus, home to over 10,000 students, is in Palmerston North.
UCOL’s Palmerston North campus, located in the city centre, boasts state of the art architecture, teaching facilities and technology. It includes a variety of purpose-built firsts - a gymnasium, model playroom, x-ray labs, a model retail shop and a room for learning massage skills. Catering students have their own restaurant 'Ambitions', which opens to the public for lunches and evening meals at various times of the year. Business administration students have a model office on-site to supplement ‘on the job’ practice.
Te Wânanga o Aotearoa
Te Wânanga o Aotearoa has 12 campuses across New Zealand. The Papaioea Campus in Palmerston North is home to almost 1,000 students involved in courses ranging from Maori language to sports and fitness.
At the Papaioea Campus tauira have the opportunity to study in a unique whânau-based environment that nurtures and assists tauira in their learning. Not only does Te Wânanga o Aotearoa cater specifically for the learning styles of Mâori, it also provides a culturally safe environment in which to study. With a more hands-on approach to learning, the Wânanga is committed to assisting tauira to succeed in education.
International Pacific College (IPC)
At the IPC campus in Palmerston North there are currently around 500 students from Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and other countries. Many students from over 20 different countries not only study together but also live together in the Halls of Residence and help build a truly international campus.
IPC provides specialist programmes, quality teaching, individual support and a friendly learning environment. The campus is set in park-like grounds said to be among the most beautiful and spacious in New Zealand. There is a library, recreation centre, tennis courts, computer laboratories, a dining hall and 10 Halls of Residence on campus. There is another Hall of Residence downtown.
New Zealand School of Export
The New Zealand School of Export based at Aokautere Business Park in Palmerston North, is committed to raising New Zealand’s exports through professional training and business development. It is the only provider in New Zealand of the internationally accredited Diploma of International Trade, a highly practical, work-based course which is delivered by distance learning to meet the needs of exporters who regularly travel overseas.
The School offers a number of Scholarships each year and has intakes in February, July and October. In addition, it publishes an annual International Trade Directory and has an online Export Library and Information Service (ELIS) which is free to all - as befits the School’s status as a Charitable Trust – via its website: www.export.ac.nz
