Education is Manawatu’s biggest business. Palmerston North is Student City.
There are over 4,500 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs in the Manawatu education sector and within Palmerston North city over 40% of the population are enrolled either part-time or full-time at local tertiary education organisations.
Given the size of the education sector in Manawatu, and the impacts on the local economy, Vision Manawatu has focused on Integrated Education as one of the three key priority areas for Manawatu's Economic Development Strategy. The other key platforms are Bio-Industry and Smart Business.
