Business Development
Growth Services Fund - New Zealand Trade & Enterprise The Growth Services Fund offers support for high growth potential firms to purchase external advice, expertise, and market development services.
The Enterprise Development Fund (EDF) – New Zealand Trade & Enterprise The fund is available to entrepreneurs, start-ups, existing businesses and groups of businesses. Under the Enterprise Development Grants scheme within the Fund, qualifying applicants can receive 50% of the costs of obtaining specialist advice or assistance - up to a maximum of $20,000 (GST inclusive) on a 50:50 reimbursement basis.
Eligible costs include:
- mentoring
- advanced management or technology-based training
- employing specific external advice
- international market development activity.
Escalator Service - New Zealand Trade & Enterprise The Escalator Service has been developed to address one of the main hurdles to growth for the thousands of businesses and entrepreneurs in New Zealand – the lack of access to and understanding of equity/venture capital or strategic partnerships. It replaces the former Investment Ready Scheme.
It is aimed at assisting business growth by providing innovative small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurial New Zealanders who need capital to expand, diversify or commercialise a new concept with skills and assistance to pursue investment opportunities.
Through the Escalator service participants can develop a greater understanding of the issues around funding their business growth, learn when additional investment is needed and how to access it. Some may also gain help in securing equity capital and/or a strategic partnership.
Enterprise Allowance Subsidy and Grant - WINZ The allowance is worked out as a weekly rate and is paid every four weeks , usually in advance. This allowance helps eligible unemployed job seekers wanting to start their own business for up to one year.
Technology Development & Innovation
TIF - Technology New Zealand A range of student scholarships from undergraduate to doctoral to allow students to work on company focused projects.
Technology for Business Growth (TBG) - Technology New Zealand Matching funds up to $500,000 for product or process development involving a high degree of technical risk and high potential returns.
SmartStart - Technology New Zealand SmartStart supports the investigation and resolution of early stage barriers to technological innovation R&D projects. SmartStart is a new way of delivering the various support options previously available under the TechLINK scheme.
The objectives of SmartStart (and TechLINK) are to assist firms to address any or all of the following issues using external resources:
- Technology project design, planning and assessment
- Technology gap and opportunity assessment
- Technology advice and guidance
- Technical or technological feasibility
- Technology investigation and acquisition
- Strategic technology planning
Global Technology Partnership
Would you like to reduce your time-to-market, improve product quality, reduce costs, and improve decision making in your company? If your answer is yes, Global Technology Partnerships could be the answer.
Global Technology Partnerships is a service that identifies partners with the knowledge and skills to solve your most challenging problems. Services are offered for: overcoming technical and regulatory barriers to trade; product development and testing; international supply chain; production and process optimisation; and technology and market due diligence.
- Finding qualified, interested experts within 10-15 working days
- Keeping the organisation anonymous
- Over 20,000 experts are contacted all over the world
- Open to all, no eligibility requirements and no forms to fill out
- Your project is managed by an experienced team of specialist with extensive technical, science and industry knowledge
Once you have selected a partner, you may be eligible for Technology for Industry Fellowships (TIF) Expert or, for New Zealand experts, TechNet funding
Two service options are available to choose from.
Partners is the basic service that includes free “hotline” access to our New Zealand network for two projects where the challenge requires local expertise. The annual subscription cost is $3,250 that includes your first search; each additional search is $2,950.
The second option is for organisations seeking from four to 12 global searches per year. Partners + allows access to the New Zealand expert network for up to five free “hotline” projects. The subscription price is $9,950 and $950 for each search. (All prices GST exclusive.)

Agriculture and Environment
Progressive Farming & Fellowships - Agmardt This programme was set up to assist groups of farmers/growers (comprising of at least five active farmers) who have identified a problem and/or opportunity to access and manage scientific and technological solutions in a focused manner. There is no set grant level, however most are within the $5,000 to $50,000 range.
Sustainable Management Fund (SMF) This fund is to support the community industry, iwi, and local government in a wide range of practical environmental management initiatives. The SMF will help achieve the Government’s environmental objectives and priorities by funding projects that provide outcomes with national benefit.
Sustainable Farming Fund - MAF Maximum grant payable will normally not exceed $200,000 per project per year.
The fund aims to help rural sectors solve problems and take up opportunities to overcome barriers to economic, social and environmental viability. It will do this by bringing together “communities of interest”.
